ONE MORE EXAM CENTRE FOR MODERN GREEK in Atlanic Canada

The  University of New Brunswick Centre for Hellenic Studies is pleased to announce that it has become an official exam centre for the attainment in Modern Greek,  by the 342/2013 decision of the board of The Centre for the Greek Language

The dates of the 2014 exam are:

A1 level (basic knowledge of Modern Greek) for children 8-12 years old. Tuesday, 20 May 2014 (morning)

A1 level  (basic knowledge for Modern Greek) for teenagers and adults.  Tuesday, 20 May 2014 (morning)

A2  level (elementary).  Tuesday, 20 May 2014 (afternoon)

B1 level (intermediate). Tuesday, 20 May 2014 (afternoon)

B2 level (upper-intermediate). Wednesday, 21 May 2014 (morning)

C1 level (advanced). Wednesday, 21 May 2014 (afternoon)

C2 level (excellent knowledge).  Thursday, 22 May 2104 (morning)

The applications start on  3 February to 21 March 2014

The UNB Greek movie nights continue!

The UNB Centre for Hellenic Studies presents the 1956 film of Michalis Cacoyannis (Zorba the Greek), THE GIRL IN BLACK, with Ellie Lambetti, Dimitri Horn, Giorgo Founda et al. one of the first Greek films to achieve international recognition at the Golden Globe Awards and was also nominated for a Golden Palm Award at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival. 

The drama takes place on the Greek island of Hydra, where two Athenian tourists while staying at a run-down bed-and-breakfast, become entangled in local feuds after one of them falls in love with the owner’s daughter, Marina, the girl in black.

Το Κέντρο Ελληνικών Σπουδών του UNB προβάλλει την ταινία του Μιχάλη Κακογιάννη, Το Κορίτσι με τα Μαύρα (1956), με την Έλλη Λαμπέτη και τον Δημήτρη Χορν στα πλαίσια των προβολών Ελληνικού Κινηματογράφου στο Πανεπιστήμιο του New Brunswick. Μια ματιά στην μεταπολεμική Ελλάδα, που προσπαθεί να ορθοποδίσει σαν την ηρωίδα της ταινίας - αγέρωχη μέσα στο πένθος της, αυτάρκης μέσα στη λιτότητά της, υψώνοντας ανάστημα στην αδικία, η Ελλάδα με την αντιφάσεις της, υπέροχη, λουσμένη στο φως.

Visit from the Consul General of the Republic of Cyprus

 

The Honourable Consul General of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Iacovos Giragosian gave a public lecture today at UNB, invited by  The Centre for Hellenic Studies
Mr. Giragosian discussed the role of Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean by providing a brief survey of the political, cultural and economic history of the island as a backdrop for the island's relationship with its neighbours. He focused primarily on the island’s future role in the political arena of this region.

Abstract
The current economic crisis in the European Union has brought Cyprus once again to the forefront globally. While it is most commonplace to use the term “bridge” or “crossroads” to describe Cyprus and its position on the map, it would probably be more appropriate to describe this small island-nation as sitting on the jugular vein of any empire worthy of mention. It was historically an indispensable asset, from a strategic point of view, for Great Powers, real or aspiring, and has been one of the most contested islands in the entire Mediterranean Sea. The island constitutes an interconnecting bridge between Europe, North Africa, the Near and Middle East, both in terms of perception and in terms of actions. In our times Cyprus is redefining its role as the south-eastern outpost member state of the European Union, and is facing new challenges in exploiting the recent off shore findings of hydrocarbon resources.

Το Κέντρο Ελληνικών Σπουδών του Πανεπιστημίου του New Brunswick είχε την χαρά και την τιμή να υποδεχθεί σήμερα τον Γενικό Πρόξενο της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας, κύριο Ιάκωβο Κιρακοσιάν. Ο κύριος Πρόξενος ανταποκρίθηκε στην πρόσκληση του Κέντρου να κάνει μια ομιλία, αναφέρθηκε στην ιστορική και στρατηγική σημασία της Μεγαλονήσου καθώς και τον ρόλο της στον διεθνή πολιτικό στίβο σήμερα. Ακολούθησε διάλογος με το κοινό και δεξίωση στο Alumni Memorial Hall του Πανεπιστημίου.

Greek Film Night at UNB

The UNB Centre for  Hellenic Studies will be presenting the 1955 film "Stella" by the acknowledged Cypriot director Mihalis Kakogiannis, in collaboration with the Culture and Language Studies Department.
 A milestone in Greek cinematography, this drama is the story of a wild, independent woman who defies convention and follows her heart. Stella is a fearless, honest woman, a seductress working in a cheap post-war Greek nightclub, "Paradisos". She will find her equal in Miltos, a football player of Olympiakos, but their relationship will be tested by her refusal to be chained in any way. "Stella" is considered the Greek version of Carmen, and the star, Melina Merkouri, was awarded a Golden Globe for her portrayal.
The film's memorable music is by Manos Hadzikakis (1961 Oscar for his song Τα παιδιά του Πειραιά).
A short introduction will be made by Dr Sophie Lavoie.

Celebrating the National Holiday. OXI day

The St Nicholas Greek Orthodox church community and friends gathered to celebrate the 28 October "OXI" day, an important National Holiday in Greece. After the Sunday mass and the Doxologia, the Greeks and the friends of the Greek community shared a delicious dinner in the Bingo Hall of the community in St John, NB. The Centre of Hellenic Studies' staff was proud to participate and inform the audience on the oncoming activities.
ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΠΟΛΛΑ, ΚΑΙ ΤΟΥ ΧΡΟΝΟΥ!
Σήμερα μαζευτήκαμε μετά τη λειτουργία και τη δοξολογία για την ημέρα του ΟΧΙ, και συμφάγαμε στην αίθουσα τελετών της κοινότητας του Ελληνορθόδου ναού του Αγίου Νικαλάου στο St John, NB. Οι διάφάνειες για τον Ελληνο-Ιταλικό πόλεμο, τη Γερμανική Κατοχή και την Αντίσταση έφεραν αναμνήσεις στα πιο σεβάσμια μέλη και έδωσε έναυσμα σε μελλοντική δράση του Κέντρου για την καταγραφή τους. Επιφυλασσόμαστε!

A new museumbox in our Library Collection

The Centre for Hellenic Studies recently purchased a museum box with attractive educational material (leaflets, booklets, cards) about the 12 gods of Olympus. The material is all in English and it is a publication of the Association of Friends of the Acropolis. The Centre will be happy to lend it to schools within Fredericton and N.B. province as well as Greek Schools in Atlantic Canada. For more information mail ekaravan-at-unb-dot-ca

Καλή Σαρακοστή!

Greeks have a wish for every occasion. "Kali Sarakosti" means "Have a good Lent period". Lent prepares the Orthodox populations body & soul for Easter. It is usually depicted as an austere lady, "kyra-Sarakosti", who has 7 feet, one for each Lent week. As the weeks pass, kyra-Sarakosti looses a foot. The figure was traditionally made of flour and was hang in the kitchen as a calendar.
Η κυρα-Σαρακοστή με τα επτά της πόδια, ένα για κάθε εβδομάδα, είναι το ημερολόγιο της περιόδου νηστείας μέχρι το Πάσχα. Η παράδοση τη θέλει μια αυστηρή γυναικεία φιγούρα από ζύμη, που χάνει κάθε εβδομάδα κι από ένα πόδι!

Sunday workshop goes online!

We finally had the workshop online. That was FUN! We played "The Labyrinth", a blindfold-trust game based on the Minotaur myth, we talked about Cornucopia (or Amaltheia's horn of plenty), and charged to destroy mount Olympus and create gigantic foil fruit, our version of "Ambrosia". The instructions, multimedia and assessment exercise was given through Skype, from the Centre for Hellenic Studies to St Nicholas Greek Orthodox students. Many thanks to the parents who built a labyrinth for the workshop!
Το τελευταίο δίωρο εργαστήρι Μυθολογίας πραγματοποιήθηκε online λόγω κακοκαιρίας με συντονιστές τις εκπαιδευτικούς από το σχολείου του Ελληνορθόδοξου ναού Αγίου Νικολάου και του Κέντρου Ελληνικών Σπουδών του Πανεπιστημίου του New Brunswick. Ήταν απολαυστικό! Όχι μόνο λόγω του θέματος (Τι έτρωγαν οι θεοί του Ολύμπου) αλλά και του ενθουσιασμού των παιδιών, που παρακολούθησαν τους μύθους ψηφιακά δραματοποιημένους, έπαιξαν παιχνίδι "Ο Λάβύρινθος", έφτιαξαν "αμβροσία" με το αλουμινόχαρτο με το οποίο έστησαν τον Όλυμπο, και μας έπεισαν πόσο νόστιμη είναι! Τέλος, ντύθηκαν με ιμάτια και χιτώνες ξανά, κάτι το οποίο μας ζήτησαν τα ίδια. Ευχαριστούμε τους γονείς που κατασκεύασαν Λαβύρινθο για το εργαστήρι μας!

Due to the bad weather, the Sunday 20th workshop in St John on the eating habits of Greek gods is cancelled. The organizers are working on alternatives and will get back to you soon!
Το Κυριακάτικο εργαστήρι Μυθολογίας αναβάλλεται λόγω κακοκαιρίας. Οι οργανώτριες θα έχουν σύντομα νέα για το πότε και πώς θα πραγματοποιηθεί.

WHAT DID THE GREEK GODS EAT?

Happy New Year to all! The last meeting of the Mythology Workshop in St John will take place this Sunday, January 20th,  at 12.00-14.00 and the theme is " Ambrosia and Nectar; the food of the Gods " !
