Two UNB departments bring you a lecture. Where philosophy meets theology.

The Department of Philosophy and the Centre for Hellenic Studies at UNB invite the university community to an intriguing public lecture entitled, "Philosophy within the Patristic Tradition" by Rev. Dr. John Palmer (University of Thessaloniki, Greece) Priest-in-charge of the Holy Lady of Vladimir Mission, St. John's Newfoundland.

Profoundly influenced by Scholasticism, the West has largely come to assume that philosophy and theology are identical, differing only in the sense that the former allows reason to operate autonomously while the latter reasons from a set number of revealed truths. The Patristic tradition, preserved primarily in the East and rooted far more deeply in Christian history, offers a significant challenge to this assumption for it claims that all true theology is ultimately the product of divine revelation experienced within the human soul and not of rational discourse.
In this lecture, Rev. Dr. John Palmer will offer a synopsis of the Patristic understanding of epistemology and then situate philosophy within the Patristic tradition, highlighting areas where it has been rejected by the Holy Fathers as well as those where it has been embraced and affirmed.

Greek Language Exam Results

Από τους πέντε υποψηφίους για τις εξετάσεις Ελληνομάθειας 2014, πέρασαν και οι πέντε και μάλιστα με πολύ καλό βαθμό. Οι τρεις ήταν φοιτητές του Πανεπιστημίου του New Brunswick. Το Κέντρο Ελληνικών Σπουδών του UNB εύχεται συγχαρητήρια σε όλους!

UNB professor lectures in Athens

UNB's own professor Constantine Passaris gave a lecture on the diplomatic relationship between Canada and Greece and the CETA agreement between Canada and the EU. Professor Passaris who is in Greece with a Onassis Foundation fellowship spoke to a large audience in the Hellenic-American Union under the auspices of the Hellenic American  College  and the Canadian Embassy.

Την ταινία θα προλογίσει μέσω skype η καθηγήτρια Κοινωνιολογίας και Εγκληματολογίας, ειδικευμένη σε θέματα φύλου και μετανάστευσης, Δρ Ευαγγελία Ταστσόγλου (Πανεπιστήμιο Saint Mary's, Halifax).

"The Brides"  is the most expensive Greek film ever made. The cast and crew under Voulagaris' direction and Martin Scorsese's executive production joins the unforgettable face of Niki Haralabidou, Golden Globe award-winner Damian Lewis, the renowned Greek author Ioanna Karystiani (script)  and the befitting musical score of Stamatis Spanoudakis. The film is in English, Greek and Russian. An introduction via Skype will be made by professor of Sociology and Criminology,  Dr Evie Tastsoglou (Saint Mary's University, Halifax), who specializes in women, gender and immigration.

The  University of New Brunswick Centre for Hellenic Studies is pleased to announce that it has become an official exam centre for the attainment in Modern Greek,  by the 342/2013 decision of the board of The Centre for the Greek Language

The dates of the 2014 exam are:

A1 level (basic knowledge of Modern Greek) for children 8-12 years old. Tuesday, 20 May 2014 (morning)

A1 level  (basic knowledge for Modern Greek) for teenagers and adults.  Tuesday, 20 May 2014 (morning)

The UNB Greek movie nights continue!

The UNB Centre for Hellenic Studies presents the 1956 film of Michalis Cacoyannis (Zorba the Greek), THE GIRL IN BLACK, with Ellie Lambetti, Dimitri Horn, Giorgo Founda et al. one of the first Greek films to achieve international recognition at the Golden Globe Awards and was also nominated for a Golden Palm Award at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival. 

The drama takes place on the Greek island of Hydra, where two Athenian tourists while staying at a run-down bed-and-breakfast, become entangled in local feuds after one of them falls in love with the owner’s daughter, Marina, the girl in black.

Μια ματιά στην μεταπολεμική Ελλάδα, που προσπαθεί να ορθοποδίσει σαν την ηρωίδα της ταινίας - αγέρωχη μέσα στο πένθος της, αυτάρκης μέσα στη λιτότητά της, υψώνοντας ανάστημα στην αδικία, η Ελλάδα με την αντιφάσεις της, υπέροχη, λουσμένη στο φως.

Visit from the Consul General of the Republic of Cyprus

 

The Honourable Consul General of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Iacovos Giragosian gave a public lecture today at UNB, invited by  The Centre for Hellenic Studies
Mr. Giragosian discussed the role of Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean by providing a brief survey of the political, cultural and economic history of the island as a backdrop for the island's relationship with its neighbours. He focused primarily on the island’s future role in the political arena of this region.

Abstract
The current economic crisis in the European Union has brought Cyprus once again to the forefront globally. While it is most commonplace to use the term “bridge” or “crossroads” to describe Cyprus and its position on the map, it would probably be more appropriate to describe this small island-nation as sitting on the jugular vein of any empire worthy of mention. It was historically an indispensable asset, from a strategic point of view, for Great Powers, real or aspiring, and has been one of the most contested islands in the entire Mediterranean Sea. The island constitutes an interconnecting bridge between Europe, North Africa, the Near and Middle East, both in terms of perception and in terms of actions. In our times Cyprus is redefining its role as the south-eastern outpost member state of the European Union, and is facing new challenges in exploiting the recent off shore findings of hydrocarbon resources.

Το Κέντρο Ελληνικών Σπουδών του Πανεπιστημίου του New Brunswick είχε την χαρά και την τιμή να υποδεχθεί σήμερα τον Γενικό Πρόξενο της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας, κύριο Ιάκωβο Κιρακοσιάν. Ο κύριος Πρόξενος ανταποκρίθηκε στην πρόσκληση του Κέντρου να κάνει μια ομιλία, αναφέρθηκε στην ιστορική και στρατηγική σημασία της Μεγαλονήσου καθώς και τον ρόλο της στον διεθνή πολιτικό στίβο σήμερα. Ακολούθησε διάλογος με το κοινό και δεξίωση στο Alumni Memorial Hall του Πανεπιστημίου.

Greek Film Night at UNB

The UNB Centre for  Hellenic Studies will be presenting the 1955 film "Stella" by the acknowledged Cypriot director Mihalis Kakogiannis, in collaboration with the Culture and Language Studies Department.
 A milestone in Greek cinematography, this drama is the story of a wild, independent woman who defies convention and follows her heart. Stella is a fearless, honest woman, a seductress working in a cheap post-war Greek nightclub, "Paradisos". She will find her equal in Miltos, a football player of Olympiakos, but their relationship will be tested by her refusal to be chained in any way. "Stella" is considered the Greek version of Carmen, and the star, Melina Merkouri, was awarded a Golden Globe for her portrayal.
The film's memorable music is by Manos Hadzikakis (1961 Oscar for his song Τα παιδιά του Πειραιά).
A short introduction will be made by Dr Sophie Lavoie.
