The bravery and courage of the Greek soldiers was acknowledged by many, among whom Hitler himself. The battle of Crete, even if it was a Pyrrhic victory for the Nazis, was considered by some as the main reason for the fortification of the Russian front and the change of the Nazi war plans. The Greek Resistance started from day one of the occupation and the removal of the Nazi flag from the Acropolis of Athens by Manolis Glezos and Apostolos Santas is considered the first act of resistance by an occupied people. Today we remember.

Τιμάμε τον ανώνυμο και επώνυμο πολεμιστή, που απέσπασε τον θαυμασμό του ίδιου του Χίτλερ, τον πολεμιστή της Κρήτης που συνέβαλε στην ματαίωση των Ναζιστικών σχεδίων για το Ρωσικό μέτωπο και την πρώτη πράξη αντίστασης από λαό υπό κατοχή με το κατέβασμα της ναζιστικής σημαίας από τον Ιερό Βράχο από τον Μανόλη Γλέζο και Απόστολο Σάντα. Η κληρονομιά βαριά, ενσωματώθηκε στο συλλογικό ασυνείδητο και βρίσκει τρόπους να εκδηλώνεται στις δυσχέρειες. Ελπίζουμε...

ΚΑΛΗ ΠΡΩΤΟΜΑΓΙΑ!

Καλό Μήνα με στεφάνια και λουλούδια, και κοινωνικούς αγώνες! The first of May is celebrated with wreaths of flowers on Greek doors, and various activities relating to the working class movement in Greece, a sort of Greek labour day. Below is what is known as the "Greek Pieta", a mother lamenting her son, killed in the 1936 demonstration in Salonica, on May 1rst. The image inspired Greek poet Giannis Ritsos to write his Epitaph, which was later put into music by Mikis Theodorakis. Listen HERE. 

ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ ΑΝΕΣΤΗ ΜΕ "ΙΣΤΟΡΙΚΑ" ΑΒΓΑ!

 Φέτος το μάθημα ιστορίας τελείωσε με το τσούγκρισμα αβγών που αντιστοιχούσαν στις εργασίες των φοιτητών Νέας Ελληνικής Ιστορίας. Στην εικόνα βλέπετε δύο από τα θέματα με τα οποία ασχολήθηκαν οι σπουδαστές, τη βιογραφία του Βενιζέλου και τη Φιλική Εταιρία. Παρεμπιπτόντως, ο Αλέξανδρος Υψηλάντης τους τσάκισε όλους (η Μαντώ Μαυρογένους και η Ηρώ Κωνσταντοπούλου αρνήθηκαν να συγκρουστούν - οι ιδιοκτήτες τους θέλησαν να διατηρήσουν τα αβγά τους!).

This year's Modern Greek history lesson ended with an egg breaking contest with Easter eggs based on the student's presentation. Venizelos, Ipsilantis, Mado Mavrogenous, Athanasios Diakos and Iro Konstandopoulou related to this years papers, which were evaluated by both instructor and peers. Some eggs refused to break, as their owners wanted to keep them as tokens!

The Centre for Hellenic Studies at the University of New Brunswick in Canada, was founded seven years ago. Professor of Archeology Dr. Maria Papaioannou, Director of the Centre, explains the reasons that led to its creation, its vision, aims and aspiration. Read the interview in Greek and English.

2015 EXAM DATES FOR THE ATTAINMENT IN GREEK.

 The 2015 dates for the conduct of the examinations for the attainment in Greek:

Tuesday 19 May 2015 --> levels A1 for children 8-12, A1 for adolescents and adults, A2 and B1
Wednesday 20 May 2015 --> levels B2 and Γ1
Thursday 21 May 2015 --> level Γ2.
Registrations are to be held from the 2nd of February to the 20th of March 2015 and they will be online.
