SURFING THE AEGEAN is a holistic approach to Modern Greek identity as seen by mainland and diaspora Greeks, and will use multimedia, print and digital  sources as well as hands-on activities to engage students to discover the various elements that form contemporary Hellenic Culture. The lessons will go beyond stereotypical presentations or touristic oversimplifications of “Greekness” that have plagued the understanding of Modern Greece. However, the course content does include topics on cuisine and dancing along with music, theatre, folk culture, great literary works, and historical accounts. Είναι μια εξερεύνηση της ελληνικής κουλτούρας που βασίζεται σε αισθητηριακή όσο και γνωσιτκή προσέγγιση μορφών του νέου Ελληνικού πολιτισμού. Μέαα από ποικίλες δραστηριότητες, οι φοιτητές καλούνται να αποδομήσουν την ελληνική κουλτούρα, να αναλογιστούν περί αυθεντικότητας και στερεοτύπων, να μιλήσουν με Έλληνες της διασποράς και ταξιδιώτες, ώστε να επαναδομήσουν τη νέα ελληνική ταυτότητα μέσα από την αφήγηση, αυθεντικά αντικείμενα φερμένα από την Ελλάδα, γεύσεις, ακούσματα, χορό. 2016 Greek Language Exams at UNB

The exams for the attainment of the certificate of Modern Greek Language will take place on Tuesday, 10 May 2016 at Carleton Hall, University of New Brunswick. For more information on the exams visit the Greek Language Centre.
Και φέτος οι εξετάσεις ελληνομάθειας θα διεξαχθούν στο Κέντρο Ελληνικών Σπουδών του Πανεπιστημίου του New Brunswick, την Τρίτη, 10 Μαΐου 2016. Πληροφορίες για τις εξετάσεις θα βρείτε ΕΔΩ.

Υπενθυμίζουμε στους φίλους μας ότι το Κέντρο Ελληνικών Σπουδών ανέλαβε τη διεξαγωγή των εξετάσεων για διευκόλυνση των ενδιαφερομένων στις περιοχές του Ατλαντικού Καναδά που γειτνιάζουν με το New Brunswick, ώστε να μη χρειαστεί να μεταβαίνουν στο Τορόντο. ΚΟΠΗ ΠΙΤΑΣ 2016 - CUTTING THE NEW YEAR PIE!

The New Year Pie cutting ("VassiLOpeeta": St. Basil's Pie) is a beloved custom going back to the Roman era in Greece. Legend blends with history as St. Basil, Ceasaria's bishop and great philanthropist,  put a coin into loafs of bread and gave them out to the poor. To commemorate we did the same with a round cake in today's Modern Greek language lesson. The Director of studies of the UNB Centre for Hellenic Studies cut the pie into twelve pieces. First pieces traditionally go to St. Basil and the Centre (or one's household), then our students by alphabetical order. We saved a piece for those who couldn't make it. The lucky coin is yet to be found! Thank our guests for attending. Kie too hronoo! May we live to do it next year!
Σήμερα κόψαμε τη βασιλόπιτα στο Κέντρο Ελληνικών Σπουδών του Πανεπιστημίου του New Brunswick, μετά το μάθημα για τις κτητικές αντωνυμίες. Πάνω στην ώρα λοιπόν είπαμε το καθιερωμένο "Του Χριστού" "Του Αγίου Βασιλείου" κλπ. με τους φοιητές και τους καθηγητές-λάτρεις των ελληνικών να παρίστανται και να γεύονται την πίτα με την κρυφή ελπίδα να τους τύχει το νόμισμα. Ακόμα περιμένουμε, γιατί πιθανόν να βρίσκεται στο κομμάτι των φοιτητών που ασθενούσαν σήμερα και έλειπαν! ΚΑΛΗ ΧΡΟΝΙΑ!

Zorba the Greek @UNB

Cavafy's "Ithaca" and Kazantzakis' Zorba have become UNB favorites during the years Modern Greek Literature has been offered as a course at the University of New Brunswick. On Thursday, 19 November, we are watching the film. All students are welcome. Free entrance. See the trailer HERE.

Read an excerpt from Zorba, taught for years in Greek high-schools:

"We are little grubs, Zorba, minute grubs on the small leaf of a tremendous tree. The small leaf is the earth. The other leaves are the stars that you see moving at night. We make our way on this little leaf examining it anxiously and carefully. We smell it; it smells good or bad to us. We taste it and find it eatable. We beat on it and it cries out like a living thing.
"Some men -- the more intrepid ones -- reach the edge of the leaf. From there we stretch out, gazing into chaos. We tremble. We guess what a frightening abyss lies beneath us. In the distance we can hear the noise of the other leaves of the tremendous tree, we feel the sap rising from the root of our leaf and our hearts swell. Bent thus over the awe-inspiring abyss, with all our bodies and all our souls, we tremble with terror. From that moment begins…"
"I stopped. I wanted to say "from that moment begins poetry," but Zorba would not have understood. I stopped.
"'What begins'? asked Zorba's anxious voice. 'Why did you stop'?
"…begins the great danger, Zorba. Some grow dizzy and delirious, others are afraid; they try to find an answer to strengthen their hearts, and they say: 'God'! Others again, from the edge of the leaf, look over the precipice calmly and bravely and say: 'I like it.'!

Φέτος παρακολουθούμε την ταινία από την πανεπιστημιακή βιβλιοθήκη σε ανοιχτή προβολή για την ακαδημαϊκή κοινότητα, την Πέμπτη, 19 Νοεμβρίου. Διαβάστε ένα απόσπασμα που είναι ο πυρήνας της βιοθεωρίας του συγγραφέα ΕΔΩ. Αναλυτικά εξέθεσε τη μεταφυσική του στην Ασκητική ή Salvatores Dei.

The bravery and courage of the Greek soldiers was acknowledged by many, among whom Hitler himself. The battle of Crete, even if it was a Pyrrhic victory for the Nazis, was considered by some as the main reason for the fortification of the Russian front and the change of the Nazi war plans. The Greek Resistance started from day one of the occupation and the removal of the Nazi flag from the Acropolis of Athens by Manolis Glezos and Apostolos Santas is considered the first act of resistance by an occupied people. Today we remember.

Τιμάμε τον ανώνυμο και επώνυμο πολεμιστή, που απέσπασε τον θαυμασμό του ίδιου του Χίτλερ, τον πολεμιστή της Κρήτης που συνέβαλε στην ματαίωση των Ναζιστικών σχεδίων για το Ρωσικό μέτωπο και την πρώτη πράξη αντίστασης από λαό υπό κατοχή με το κατέβασμα της ναζιστικής σημαίας από τον Ιερό Βράχο από τον Μανόλη Γλέζο και Απόστολο Σάντα. Η κληρονομιά βαριά, ενσωματώθηκε στο συλλογικό ασυνείδητο και βρίσκει τρόπους να εκδηλώνεται στις δυσχέρειες. Ελπίζουμε...
